In 2020, HOOPS started as an opportunity to train young players and provide them the knowledge from a former Division 1 coach and professional trainer. After spending time working with players of different genders, ages, and socio-economic backgrounds, we wanted to build a gym that is a HOME for all and UNITE Birmingham. Our mission is to create generational change through the sport of basketball by providing an inclusive experience to build a better brand of: human first and player second.
In this HOME the definition of winning will be re-defined from the results on a scoreboard, to the character of a person on the court and in life.
HOOPS is bigger than one person, team, game, or area.
HOOPS is for the players, for the culture, forever.
THE CODE.
Learning from several coaches in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, as well as some Hall of Fame people, we have developed a list of 7 CORE CULTURE VALUES that each HOOPER will learn and be molded from. These values do not rely on talent; just an open mind and being coachable. Every event and decision made at HOOPS will be a direct reflection and based around ‘THE CODE.’ THE CODE is what HOOPS is about: using the game of basketball to develop leaders for a better future. Creating generational change one player, coach, parent, and person at a time.

Samford University – Head Coach
I’ve had the opportunity of watching Coach Newt impact the game of basketball at a variety of levels the last 10 years. He has worked with professional athletes, top tier college athletes, high school athletes, middle school athletes, and has worked with those who are learning the game for the first time. His unique ability to connect with players of different ages and skill levels has been beyond impressive to witness.

When it comes to knowledge on basketball & building leaders through the game, Newt not only knows WHAT to teach players, but also the WHY behind it. This is a trait that separates him & the players he’s had from others. Every player that comes through Newts gym will get better & will develop into a physically & mentally tougher player & person.

Mannnnn my guy Newt! Man I remember us going at in practice like it was yesterday. I remember Newt was the one on our College team who played me the toughest and hardest in practice. I learned how to play through contact cause of Newt & he really got me better Even before every game Newt use to make sure I was ready. I still remember the saying he use to tell me before the games “My gym, my grind, my time”. I still say that before every game till this day. Newt helped me after my senior year with working me out and taking me to meet World Wide Wes. Hey man I appreciate everything he did for me. Much love and success to my guy!
